The American colonies inherited ideas about human rights from the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights. Both these documents limited the power of royalty and raised the power of the people. The English law making body, Parliament, was established to limit the power of the king and give more power to the people.
The battle to limit the king resulted in the English Civil War in which the king was executed by Parliament. Later Parliament removed another king who would not listen to them. Most Americans were well aware of this history.
